FIFA World Cup 2018 will come to an end on Sunday 15th July when France takes on Croatia. Le Bleus were among the five favorites to win it this year but nobody expected to see their opponents in the final. The two European giants defeated Belgium (1-0) and England (2-1) in the semi-finals on Tuesday and Wednesday. It is the third time Didier Deschamps side is reaching this stage. They won it in 1998 when they hosted the tournament but Italy emerged victorious in 2006. Zlatko Dalić warriors are reaching the final for the first time.

France Vs. Croatia

France is the big favorite to lift the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia. The 1998 champions thrashed Belgium 1-0 to book a place in the final. They overcame Uruguay 2-0 in the quarterfinals and Argentina 4-3 in the round of 16. They won their group with two wins and a draw. The team has a perfect mix of youth and experience. Antoine Griezmann has played a key role when the team needs a cool head. Kylian Mbappe has added the much-needed energy when the attacks need it, and Hugo Lloris has pulled the saves when they are in trouble. Didier Deschamps side has ticked all the boxes so far.
Croatia has made history. The pundits did not give them a chance in the semi-final but they came from 1-0 down to beat England 2-1. This was the fourth time they were coming from behind to win in 2018 World Cup alone. In their final group game against Iceland, they came from 1-0 down to win 2-1 to top the group with 9 points. In the last 16, Denmark scored first but Luka Modric side equalized and they won it in post-match penalties. In the quarterfinals, Russia went ahead thanks to a glorious goal by Dennis Cheryshev. Dalic side came back to score twice, Russia equalized in extra time but Rakitic won it for the Central European side in yet another penalty shootout to eliminate the hosts.
What can we expect in the final?
History favors the French but Croatia has the momentum. The fact that they reached the final after so many obstacles mean Zlatko Dalić men will feel it’s written in the sky. Didier Deschamps has every tool he needs to unlock his opponent on Sunday. He can decide to attack like he did against Argentina or approach it defensively like he did against Belgium. He team reached EURO 2016 final but lost 1-0 to Portugal. This group of players will not want to make another mistake. They have not won anything yet and they look very hungry for success. The team has no big egos; they will listen to their coach and implement his ideas. He captained his country in 1998 final, so they know he understands it better.
In 1998, Croatia lost 2-1 to the host’s thanks to a surprise double from fullback Lillian Thuram. Luka Modric and his colleagues will want to make it right this weekend. The good news is that his team needs no motivation. They are over the moon at the moment. The team has fought for everything so far and they will feel they must be rewarded for it. Zlatko Dalić has created a warrior mentality in this team and you can expect them to sweat blood for glory on Sunday.
If France expects an easy final, they will be in for a rude shock on Sunday. No tactic will be 100% useful on the day because it will be about passion and determination to make history. This is where the Croats will have an edge.

France has won three times in 5 matches the two sides have faced each other since 1998 semi-final. The other two were draws. However, like we saw against England, history counts for nothing at this stage. It is the team that wants it more on the day. Le Bleus will feel it is their time to win the World Cup for the second time. No player will want to make a mistake after 2016 EURO heartbreak. It could’ve been easier to play Three Lions in the final than Croatia. This is because their opponents have already made history by reaching their first ever final. They will play with zero pressure and this only means trouble for Didier Deschamps men.
