Of course, footballers are not allowed to gamble on sports matches, particularly football and so are left with poker or the casino to relax and spend time away from the pressures of high-level football. Being in their 20s and early 30s, it should come as no surprise that many professional footballers like a flutter every now and again. Down are the footballers who like to gamble.

5. Paul Merson

Today, he is best known as a football pundit, but Merson has a history as one of the most prolific gamblers in football. Although Merson seems to have overcome his addictions, he estimates to have lost as much as £7 million in gambling alone!

Ten years ago, he even gambled away his flat and was forced to move back in with his parents at the age of 40.

4. Wayne Rooney

Former Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney reportedly ran up a gambling debt of £700,000 in 2006. He was betting on horses, and dogs with Stephen Smith; a business associate of fellow footballer Michael Owen.

3. Neymar Jr

Last year, PokerStars ambassador, Neymar Jr. was rated as the most expensive soccer player in the world according to the CIES Football Observatory.

“A case in point is his sponsorship deal with PokerStars. After demonstrating his love for poker by playing online and at events such as the European Poker Tour (EPT), Neymar Jr. agreed to represent PokerStars as a brand ambassador.” CIES Football Observatory wrote.
