Liverpool News
Liverpool’s Champions League adventure seems to be over for another season after they were ripped to shreds by Real Madrid last night, therefore why not keep abreast of the very latest Liverpool news and match reports which can be found at Sokkaa.com.
Liverpool reeling from Champions League thrashing
Low priority trophies
Despite showing so much promise last season, Liverpool were ultimately forced to contend themselves with two pieces of silverware, namely the FA Cup and the League Cup. To be fair, these were the two trophies which weren’t high on their list of priorities and hopes were high that the 2022/23 campaign would bring more in the way of prizes.
Hopes dashed to pieces
These hopes have been dashed to pieces and following last night’s humiliating 5-2 drubbing at home to Real Madrid, Jurgen Klopp’s men are very much on course to finish the season with nothing to show for their troubles.
Ground to make up
The Reds did manage to lift themselves up to eighth position in the Premier League table following their win over Newcastle United last weekend, however they have lots of ground to make up if they wish to be in with a chance of breaking into the Champions League berths for next term.
Cup failures
Klopp’s side failed to successfully defend their two domestic trophies of 2021/22 and while they finished just a single point behind champions Manchester City in the Premier League table at the end of last season, it’s clear that they will some way distant at the close of the current campaign.
Distant memory
Liverpool’s Premier League title triumph of 2019/20 is now a distant memory although it has been brought back into focus following recent performances. In many respects, their first ever Premier League title was overshadowed by the Covid-19 pandemic which had resulted in depleted squads and caused chaos in the fixture list. The season was eventually completed but to be fair, the Reds didn’t need to work too hard in a division which was in reality focusing more on the following season than the current one.
Also-rans
This has now been brought firmly into focus and the stark fact is that Liverpool are finding the going tough once again. They came close to pipping Man City at the post in the Premier League and made it through to the Champions League Final last season, however no-one wins trophies for coming second.
Trophy-free season
Last night’s thumping at home to Real Madrid effectively means that the Reds are going to finish the season with two less trophies than 2021/22. They could mount a comeback in the second leg at the Bernabeu but realistically, this really isn’t going to happen.
Europa League
Where next for Liverpool? Is Klopp’s future with the club in any way uncertain? Thus far he has been untouchable but this could change once the season has drawn to a close. Either way, something needs to change at Anfield and the hierarchy can ponder on this as they look forward to a season of Europa League football. At best.
