Liverpool News: Pep Lijnders favourite to succeed Jurgen Klopp
Liverpool’s 3-0 capitulation to Wolverhampton Wanderers last weekend was a dismal reflection of how far the side has slumped since coming close to winning everything on offer in 2021/22.
Liverpool came within a whisker of winning everything in 2021/22. They finished the Premier League campaign just one point short of champions Manchester City and reached the final of the Champions League where, despite being the better side overall, they lost to Real Madrid. All they got to show for their efforts were the FA Cup and EFL Cup although they have limped out of both competitions this term.
Indeed as things stand, Liverpool sit tenth in the Premier League table and are expected to come off second best against Real Madrid in the first knockout round of the Champions league. Questions are being asked about Jurgen Klopp, a manager who until recently has been effectively untouchable, and it is entirely conceivable that he will be sacked unless he can turn things around.
Were Liverpool to part company with Klopp, who would take the reins? Favourite at the time of writing is assistant boss Pepijn Lijnders who is a general 5/2 shot to take charge, while former Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel is priced at 4/1 to succeed Klopp. Former Reds legend Steven Gerrard remains one of the favourites although his tenure at Villa Park has resulted in his odds drifting to a general 9/2.
Julian Nagelsmann is next in the market at 13/2 while Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou completes the top five in the betting at 15/2.
Clearly the majority of Liverpool fans will want Klopp to stay but he may well decide to walk before he is pushed should he fail to revive his side’s fortunes. Were Liverpool to start searching for a suitable replacement, then perhaps Postecoglou would be a perfect fit for the club.
