Lionel Messi ‘rejects’ new Barcelona deal and will see out his current contract

Lionel Messi has rejected Barcelona’s offer of a new deal and will see out his current contract, according to Spanish sport daily Marca.

The reason for Messi’s reluctance to sign a new contract is reported to be his ongoing dispute with Spanish tax authorities. The 29-year-old joined Barcelona in 2001 at the age of 14 and has gone to become the club’s all time top scorer with 480 goals in 577 appearances so far.

  • The Argentina star’s current contract expires  at the end of the next season, 2018.
  • Messi has won many titles with Barcelona, including eight La Liga and four Champions League titles
  • With the Catalan giants, Messi is the only football player in history to win five FIFA Ballons d’Or.
