Julen Lopetegui’s father, Jose Antonio, has revealed that Cristiano Ronaldo exit and the failure to find his suitable replacement is the reason behind Real Madrid’s demise this season.

Lopetegui was appointed as Los Blancos manager in the summer following Zinedine Zidane departure.

But the Spaniard’s side lost five times in their last six matches and was now sacked after a 5-1 defeat in the El Clasico against Barcelona on Sunday evening.

The European champions have now 14 out of a possible 30 points in the league this season but Antonio thinks his son shouldn’t have been sacked.

The 52-year-old’s father has also insisted that Los Blancos failed to find a high-calibre replacement for Ronaldo, who is able to score around or more than 50 goals per season.

“Cristiano Ronaldo was good. Was he cocky? We all have defects, but it turns out he scored 50 goals a season,” Lopetegui’s father told Spanish paper, El Mundo.

“He is missing. You are missing a prominent goalscorer. They haven’t bought one, not a single one.”

“There was talk of Neymar and others, but no one came. They have stolen 50 goals from my son!”

Lopetegui’s father has also claimed that his son was delighted with the Real Madrid players, despite being sacked.

“He has to settle with what he has and don’t get me wrong, he is delighted with the players he has.”

“He usually says: ‘I have great people, they give everything they’ve got.’ He doesn’t blame the players.

“But when there is no material, there isn’t. There was but he left.”
