After a dreadful start to the World Cup with 2-0 defeat to high flying Luka Modric Croatian team, Ahmed Musa gave Nigeria a lifeline by waking the team from the dead with his brilliant brace against World Cup debutants Iceland in the Group D encounter at the Volgograd Arena.

Leicester City striker put the Super Eagles in front in the 49th minute after a swift counter-attack, then doubled the advantage when he rounded Iceland goalkeeper, Halldorsson and fired a shot into the net from close range on 75 minutes.

In his blessed day, Musa made history for himself by setting three Nigerian World Cup records in one day. He’s the only Nigerian player to score a brace in a World Cup game.

The former Kano Pillars player became the first Nigerian player to score at two different World Cups (2014, 2018)

The 25-year-old is also the top scorer for Nigeria in the history of the World Cup with four goals, beating a record he jointly held with Emmanuel Amunike, Daniel Amokachi and Kalu Uche.

The result moves Nigeria into second place in Group D on three-point, with Iceland and Argentina trailing with a point apiece. Croatia have already qualified, likely as group winners, following their wins over Nigeria and Argentina.
