Herrera was named for the first time in Julen Lopetegui’s squad for Spain’s 2018 World Cup qualifiers against Italy and Albania this week.

And the midfielder has admitted he’s proud to finally have been given the opportunity to earn his first Spain cap.

One of those to wish Herrera well was United team-mate Michael Carrick and his team Manchester United, who tweeted:

Herrera has been in fine form for United this season, making eight appearances in all competitions and has formed a strong midfield partnership with Paul Pogba, and manager Mourinho also has admired him.

“He can be an important player for us because we play with four attacking players, plus Paul, who likes a lot to go to different positions to try and create,” Jose Mourinho said.

“We need a player like Ander because he is very fast on the defensive transition and he can give us the security we need, especially against fast counter-attacks.”
