The last 10 years of the Ballon d’Or award have been dominated by Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, but there’s a new competitor emerging in 2018. Mohamed Salah is a serious contender for the Ballon d’Or and other FIFA Best prizes.
End of duopoly
The 25-year-old has been in stunning form since his summer switch from Roma and his clever header against Bournemouth on Saturday was his 40th goal of the season. It’s a remarkable debut campaign at Anfield if you consider firing his country to the 2018 World Cup.

Ronaldo and Messi, who have both entered their thirties, have each won five Ballon d’Or’s since Kaka claimed the award in 2007. However, Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah appears to be a serious contender to break up the duopoly.

Salah will lead the line for his country this at this summer’s World Cup after scoring the decisive goal to send them to Russia. Reds legend, Robbie Fowler, believes his international exploits should disrupt the dominance of the two La Liga superstars.
All three players have produced magnificent statistics, and Salah is surely in contention to end their era of dominance. It’s almost impossible to separate the three of them right now.

“Scoring 40 goals means a lot,” said Salah on Saturday. “But I try to score every game to help the team. To get the points. “That is the most important thing for us, that we play as a team, we play as 11 players. So each goal for me, or for anyone else is to try to help the team.”
Everyone had predicted that Neymar would be the next player to win the Ballon d’Or, but Salah could prove us all wrong.
You think he’s at the standard of Messi and Ronaldo? They’ve done it for a decade. Salah has done it for 1 season… he’s good but you can’t compare him to messi and Ronaldo

This is a different case than the usual ronaldo and Messi debate though with salah inclusive. All due respect to salah but don’t think he will win balon d’or even if Liverpool wins the UCL. INiesta &ribery failed to do it with their consistent performance don’t think salah will. https://t.co/GBrvn3lLBT

Salah has 40goals and 11 assists this season. Sorry that is even more than Messi. Salah isn’t a one season wonder and he is currently playing at a level hazard or Neymar or greizmann have never even reached. The Messi Ronaldo level. Don’t be sentimental. Long live the African

Remember when we signed Mo Salah and people posted this video to laugh at him. That same man is playing on levels with Messi and Ronaldo this season. How times change. pic.twitter.com/1ZwDbBlPB7

Salah out here breaking records and outperforming Ronaldo and Messi but KDB deserves the POTY because he pinged a 40-yard pass

I hate to admit this but Mo Salah is the actual heir to Messi and Ronaldo…..not Eden Hazard.

Ronaldo and Messi have really killed the appreciation of defensive players in the game. How is Salah any more of the premier league player of the year than De Gea? It's not like Salah's goals have led Liverpool to the title, so why is it so clear?
