The Ballon d’Or 2018 left endless debates as the Messi-Ronaldo duopoly finally ended. Players like Paul Poga, Neymar and Luis Suarez failed to make it to the top 10. This left discussions on the rankings. All in all, here are the 5 players who did not deserve their rankings.
5. Thibaut Courtois (Real Madrid & Belgium)
Former Chelsea shot-stopper finished 14th in the 2018 Ballon d’Or rankings, becoming the highest ranked goalkeeper in the Ballon d’Or awards for 2018. But was he really the best goalkeeper in the world? Though De Gea has made some errors in the World Cup, he certainly was a lot better than Courtois last season. Hugo Lloris was brilliant for France and Tottenham Hotspur while Alisson Becker was exceptional for Brazil and AS Roma.
4. Paul Pogba (Manchester United & France)
Paul Pogba finished 15th in the 2018 Ballon d’Or awards. The 25-year-old was a key figure in France’s World Cup win in Russia. Though he was good last season, he wasn’t at his very best. He was inconsistent on occasions and failed to hit his peak. However, one may feel that he does not deserve to finish ahead of Ivan Rakitic in the 2018 Ballon d’Or.
3. Gareth Bale (Real Madrid & Wales)
Gareth Bale was not able to inspire Wales as they failed to qualify for the World Cup in Russia. He made only 20 starts in La Liga last season and three in the UEFA Champions League. Though he is still one of the best forwards in world football, a 17th place finish raises a lot of questions.
