Real Madrid announced the sacking of Julen Lopetegui on Monday evening. The news was expected after the 5-1 El Clasico humiliation on Sunday against Barcelona. This follows a string of bad results, losing 6 and drawing 2 of 14 games since he took over from Zidane last summer. But according to some football lovers, Lopetegui was without faults at all and the blame should be on some players instead. All in all, here are the 5 players Real Madrid should have sacked instead of Julen Lopetegui.
5. Marco Asensio
With superb long-range goals against Barca in 2016, people thought Marco Asensio would be a real deal for Real Madrid. However, ever since then, he has been all hype and little show. The Spaniard hardly dribbles past his direct opponent, looks shaky under pressure, and lacks the pace to outrun defenders. The only thing Asensio has proven to be good is long-range shooting. He has scored just once in the 14 games that he has played this season.
4. Gareth Bale
Injuries have destroyed Gareth Bale’s career. His unbelievable pace, strong shots, and goalscoring abilities have faded away year by year. This season, without Ronaldo, was the perfect opportunity for him to be the main man. But with just four goals from 12 games, it is safe to admit that he is far away from that. As results, Lopetegui took the blame.
3. Toni Kroos
Toni Kroos has been one of the best midfielders in the entire world. But he went on to become terrible as time went by, and there is no wonder if Germany were knocked out of the tournament from the group stages itself. His tenacity has faded away. This season too many opponents have run circles around him and he looked least bothered by it. He hasn’t been able to stamp his authority in midfield and has been a poor guardian for the backline.
