Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk has revealed what Arsenal defender Sokratis said to Mohamed Salah in the tunnel bust-up during the Reds’ 5-1 win over the Gunners in the weekend.

The Merseyside club punished the North London side with Firmino scored a hat-trick, while Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah were also on target.

Salah has earned a penalty after being fouled by Sokratis in the box and the Greek defender was not happy with the decision.

The incident was followed by a tunnel bust-up between Sokratis and Liverpool winger Salah, who was blamed to dive. But Virgil played down the tunnel bust-up defending his team-mate.

“I saw that he went to Mo (Salah) and was saying that he dived,” Van Dijk said.

“He was attacking him a bit, but I wanted to say he didn’t dive.”

“Obviously everyone came around us and it looked like we were fighting or something but we weren’t.”

“I just wanted to talk to him. But that happens in football and we move on.”

“I’m protecting my team-mates and that’s normal, that’s how everyone should react and that’s what we all need to do, to back each other. That’s what I definitely do.”

Liverpool sit top of the table with seven points clear before travelling to the Etihad to take on second-placed Manchester City on Thursday night.
