Arsenal boss Unai Emery has confirmed that the club have opened contract talks with Spanish defender Nacho Monreal.
The 32-year-old, whose current deal expires at the end of this season, is now in talks over a new deal which will keep him at Arsenal beyond the end of the season.
The Spain international has revealed early this week that he is still happy at the Emirates Stadium and has insisted that he wants to sign a long-term contract with the Gunners.
Therefore, new Arsenal manager Emery has made it clear that talks are still in progress with the full-back.
“First, I knew Nacho Monreal in Spain when he was playing for Malaga. I knew him,” Emery told reporters at his pre-Newcastle United press conference.
“After two months now, I can say I am happy with him. He is 32 years old, physically the performance with us, Nacho is playing with a very good level.”
“The reason for that, for me, we need to find a new contract with him to stay together with the Arsenal team.”
Monreal, who joined the Gunners from Malaga in January 2013, has gone on to feature 215 times and scored 10 goals for the North London side.
Arsenal will travel to St James’ Park on Saturday afternoon to face Newcastle United with Emery looking to secure his third Premier League win of the season.
