Liverpool thrashed AS Roma 5-2 in the first leg of this year UEFA Champions League semi-final played at Anfield on Tuesday night. The Serie A side was taken apart by their former player Mohamed Salah and his teammates for 80 minutes. However, they came back to life in the last 10 minutes to score two crucial away goals. This means the tie is not over yet considering what the Italians did to Barcelona in the quarter-final stage. Today, we want to look at seven clubs with most appearances in European Cup final in the history of the competition.
Today, we take a look at seven teams with most final appearances in history;
7. Benfica- 7 UCL Finals
Portuguese fallen giants Benfica have appeared in 7 finals. They won the title in 1961 and 1962 defeating Barcelona and Real Madrid respectively. They last made the final in 1990 but AC Milan was too strong for them.
6. Liverpool- 7 UCL Finals
Liverpool is looking to go level with Barcelona if they manage to eliminate AS Roma to reach Champions League final this year. The Reds are the only English representative on the list. They have won the coveted trophy five times. They have played in 7 finals so far. The last time they lifted the trophy was in 2005 when they came from 3-0 down to win it in post-match penalties against AC Milan. Their last final appearance was in 2007 when they lost to AC Milan. Jurgen Klopp men won semi-final first leg 5-2 on Tuesday night. They need to win or avoid a 3-0 defeat in Rome next Wednesday to book a place in the final.
5. Barcelona- 8 UCL Finals
Barcelona has been the most dominant team in Europe in the last 15 years. They have won it four times in a very short period of time. They won it in 2006, 2009, 2011 and 2015. The four adds to the one they won in 1992. This year they were knocked out in the quarterfinals by AS Roma. They have played in 8 Champions League finals in their history.
4. Juventus- 9 UCL Finals
Juventus is no doubt the most unlucky team in UEFA Champions League history. The Old Lady has so far played in 9 finals winning it only twice. Last season, they were dismantled by Real Madrid in the final and the same team eliminated them in the quarter-final stage this season. It is a team that is at its peak at the moment. The likes of Buffon, Chiellini, Bazaghli, and Mandzukic might not see another final any time soon.
