Barcelona completed the signing of 21-year-old Brazilian winger Malcom from Bordeaux for £36.5m. It was not a normal transfer because AS Roma had agreed on everything with the Ligue 1 club. The player was supposed to travel to Italy for medical but a late offer from Camp Nou killed the deal. The Serie A giant is reportedly considering legal action against Bordeaux but given no deal was signed, it is unlikely they will succeed. It is the reason why we want to look at the five biggest transfer hijacks in history. Manchester United fans will talk of Pedro or Mikel but we have the big ones below.

Statement from Roma Sporting Director Monchi;

“I was surprised to be told that the agents and Bordeaux wanted another improved offer, as Barcelona were still pushing for a deal. I told them enough because we did not want to enter an auction.

“We could not continue like that, and yesterday we had only raised our offer because of the willingness and desire of our president. So that was how everything ended.

“It is true that nothing was signed, but there are many messages with the agents and their president that are at least worth being assessed.”

5. Emmanuel Petit

The rivalry between Tottenham Hotspurs and Arsenal was worsened by Emmanuel Petit in 1997. This is because the Frenchman decided to ditch White Hart Lane in the last minute to sign for Arsene Wenger.

Spurs had opened talks with Petit when he decided to leave AS Monaco after seven years. He was to travel to North London to finalize the deal but few hours before he could arrive, Arsenal opened quick negotiations. Tottenham even paid for a taxi but instead of coming to the Lane, he headed to Highbury to complete $5 million deal. He went on to win Premier League and FA Cup under fellow Frenchman Arsene Wenger.

4. David Beckham

In 2003, David Beckham had no option but to leave Manchester United. This is because his relationship with Sir Alex Ferguson had reached a point of no return. Barcelona announced they had agreed terms with the Red Devils and the player was expected to travel to Camp Nou for a medical. Real Madrid could not stand and watch as such a big star joined their rivals. They made a last minute offer and stole the famous winger under the Catalans noses again. The four years at Santiago Bernabeu were not successful as expected. Barcelona actually got a better deal because they managed to also steal Ronaldinho from Old Trafford.

3. Roy Keane

Sir Alex Ferguson was not only good in coaching and club management, he was also great at convincing players to sign for Manchester United. In 1993, Roy Keane had agreed to personal terms with Blackburn Rovers. The deal was to be completed on Friday evening but paperwork mix-up led to a delay. The two parties agreed it was better to finalize everything the following Monday. Red Devils boss got a word about the delay and called the player directly. He made the trip to Manchester and the deal was finalized in record time. He went on to win 7 Premier League crowns and 17 in total. He was in the team that lifted UEFA Champions League in 1999.
