Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi have dominated FIFA Ballon d’Or in the last ten years. The two stars have now won it five times each. The Portuguese is the favourite to win it once again in 2018 because he netted 15 goals to help Real Madrid lift their third consecutive UEFA Champions League crown in May. He also netted four times in Russia 2018 World Cup even though his country was knocked out in the round of 16. The last player from English Premier League to lift the trophy was CR7 that time playing for Manchester United. Since he switched to Santiago Bernabeu nobody from any other league outside La Liga has won it. Today, let us take a closer look at current stars in the Premier League who deserve to get the coveted crown before they say goodbye to football;
5. Paul Pogba- Manchester United
Paul Pogba scored the third goal to help France lift FIFA World Cup 2018 in Russia this year. It is the kind of contribution the fans would expect from such a big player. The Pundits say he has not realized yet just how talented he is.
Jose Mourinho must get it right next season at Manchester United if he wants the midfielder to help him with the League. Since his unceremonious departure from Manchester United, the French man has grown in stature. That is the main reason why they paid €105 million (£89.3 million) to bring him back to Old Trafford. The 25-year-old has a very bright future. He will certainly challenge Ronaldo and Messi in the race for the Ballon d’Or soon.
4. Kevin de Bruyne – Manchester City
Manchester City playmaker Kevin De Bruyne narrowly missed on all awards last season because of Mohamed Salah. The Egyptian was just too good to beat. However, on another year, the Belgian could have scooped all those awards. The creative midfielder assisted 16 goals to help Pep Guardiola side lift the Premier League crown. He went on to help his country Belgium finish third in FIFA World Cup 2018. He has also been nominated for ‘The Best’ FIFA award for 2018. If he keeps on shining, there is a chance he can lift the Ballon d’Or award in future.
3. Harry Kane- Tottenham Hotspur
England striker Harry Kane scored 6 goals to lift 2018 FIFA World Cup, Golden Boot. Tottenham Hotspurs forward was also narrowly beaten by Mohamed Salah in Premier League Golden Boot race last season. He netted 30 goals as compared to Salah 32. In 2016/17 season, he scored 29 goals in 30 appearances to lift the Golden Boot for the second year in a row. There is no doubt the only reason clubs are not bidding for him is because he will be very expensive. He continues to develop and Ballon d’Or must be one of his targets before he retires.
