Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld has agreed personal terms with Manchester United ahead of a potential move, according to Transfer Window Podcast guest Ian McGarry.
The Belgium international has been strongly linked with United move over this summer with manager Jose Mourinho wants to strengthen his backline.
The Portuguese boss has made it clear that he needs two more signings ahead of ahead of transfer deadline day on Thursday.
Barcelona defender Yerry Mina, Leicester’s Harry Maguire and Bayern’s Jerome Boateng have all been in United radar.
But Football Operations and Communications Consultant McGarry admits former Atletico Madrid star Alderweireld would appear closest to join the Old Trafford side.
Football consultant McGarry said: “I do think that Daniel Levy is fully expecting to, let’s just say ‘exploit’ Manchester United again, in the way they’ve done in the past with Michael Carrick and Dimi Berbatov.”
“They’ve taken players from Tottenham on deadline day at inflated prices.”
“It’s my understanding United have agreed personal terms with Alderweireld and it’s just down to Levy to sort out the fee for the player who has one year left on his contract.”
“I think if Yerry Mina or any of the other players mentioned don’t come in – Mina looks the most likely, Maguire the most unlikely – then I think they’ll turn back to Alderweireld and it’ll be one of those classic Tottenham-Manchester United negotiations right up to the final minutes.”
Alderweireld, who has just a year left on his contract, joined Spurs in 2015 from Atletico Madrid following a season long-loan at Southampton.
The 29-year-old has made 115 appearances and scored six goals for the Spurs in a period of three seasons.
