Clubs sign and sell players every time the transfer window opens. We all have players we would like to see our clubs sign or offload. However, since we don’t have a say in the transfers, we can only receive what we get. Sometimes the Clubs we love don’t always make the right decisions. This includes signing players that fail to live up to the expectation. It can also be selling great players just when they are about to start off a great journey. Today let us look at six of the most regrettable transfers in the last decade;
6. Rafael Da Silva- Man United to Lyon
— Man United News (@ManUtdMEN) January 6, 2015
Louis Van Gaal is the man who should be blamed for dismantling the spinal cord at Manchester United during his two-year reign. The Dutchman had good intentions but sometimes wholesale changes don’t always work. For instance, the decision to sell Rafael Da Silva and sign Matteo Darmian was a serious mistake. There are reports he does not like Brazilians but since the young defender Ferguson had natured perfectly left the club, that position has never really looked the same.
Rafael later said:
“I know that he didn’t like me, but if that’s because I’m Brazilian, I don’t know.
“I know this history that he doesn’t like Brazilians, but I can’t say ‘Oh, he doesn’t like Brazilians’
“I don’t know, sincerely. I don’t know what to say about that, because I was the only one since Anderson left before.”
“I did the complete season when he [Ferguson] left. In 2012-13 I played almost every game, it was my best season at United, we were even champions.
“And that’s when they changed the manager. That change was fatal for me. I was going well, then Ferguson left.
“That’s what changed, so Valencia started playing as a right-back for Van Gaal. He’s also a great player, but I was doing well in that position.”
5. Kingsly Coman- PSG to Juventus
PSG still regrets letting their best academy product leave for almost nothing to join Juventus in 2013/2014 season. He went on to win a treble with the Italian Champions that year. However, it is his loan deal at Bayern Munich that has made him a star. His pace and skills came to light in the Champions League match against Arsenal. He dazzled and made fellow Frenchman Mathieu Debuchy look ordinary. The Bavarians had seen enough and the following year they signed him permanently. It is one of the worst decision PSG has ever made in recent years.
4. Carlos Tevez- Man United to Man City
Carlos Tevez demand for high wages at Old Trafford led to his sale to rivals Manchester City for £25.5m. Sir Alex Ferguson signed Dimitar Berbatov to fill the gap. However, the Bulgarian could still not be as prolific as he was at Tottenham Hotspurs. Tevez, on the other hand, continued to shine for City scoring 73 goals in 148 appearances. He also helped them win a number of trophies among them FA Cup and the League.
