Manchester United’s record signing is Paul Pogba, who signed for the club from Juventus for a world record fee of £89.3 million in August 2016. The signing of Anthony Martial for £36 million in 2015 set a world record for the transfer of a teenager. Down are Manchester United’s most expensive transfers of all time.

7. Anthony Martial -£36 million

On 1 September 2015, Martial completed a move to Manchester United for £36 million, on a four-year contract with the option of another year. This was the highest transfer fee paid for a teenager, breaking the previous record of £27 million United paid for Luke Shaw a year earlier, and that Paris Saint-Germain had paid for Marquinhos in 2013.

6. Juan Mata – £37.1 million

On 24 January 2014, Mourinho said Chelsea had accepted a transfer offer from Manchester United and he allowed Mata to travel to Manchester to undergo a medical after the player said he was “really happy to go”.

The transfer was completed the following day, with Manchester United paying Chelsea a then club record fee of £37.1 million (€46 million), with Mata signing a contract until the summer of 2018.

5. Nemanja Matic – £40 million

On 30 July 2017, a photo was leaked of Matic wearing a Manchester United training kit printed with the number 31 vacated by Bastian Schweinsteiger the previous March, fuelling rumours that Matic was on the verge of a reunion with former Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho.

Manchester United confirmed the deal the next day, with Matic signing a three-year contract with an option for an extra year on a £40 million fee.

4. Fred – £47 million

On 5 June 2018, Premier League club Manchester United reached an agreement to sign Fred for £47 million. He was officially introduced on the club’s website 16 days later. He agreed on a five-year contract with the option to extend for a further year.
