The Statue of Argentine footballer Lionel Messi erected less than one year ago in Argentine capital Buenos Aires has been vandalized by unknown people. The five times Ballon d’Or is not a popular figure in his home country for not delivering any trophy despite massive success with Spanish giants Barcelona.
“The statue of Lionel Messi fell victim to an act of vandalism that left the footballer’s sculpture without its top half,” a statement from the Buenos Aires city government read.
“The City Government is now working on its repair.”
Messi lost out 2016 Ballon d’Or award to Cristiano Ronaldo of Real Madrid. He also lost FIFA Best Player of the Year award to the same player on Monday night in Zurich.
