Football finance expert Kieran Maguire has revealed that Manchester United playmaker Jesse Lingard could be on his way to Chelsea this summer.
The England international is currently enjoying an impressive performance in Russia as the Three Lions have already reached the World Cup quarter-finals.
The 25-year-old has also been admired by England head coach Gareth Southgate insisting that the midfielder is excellent in the tournament.
Therefore, football finance Maguire has claimed that Lingard’s current performance allows him to be worth £80m.
Maguire has also added that only West London side Chelsea would be interested in the Manchester United’s academy graduate.
Maguire told Starsport: “I think as far as Lingard is concerned, it would give him the opportunity to cement his place at United and perhaps make [Jose] Mourinho think twice about trying to sign anyone new.”
“He is a local lad and he wants to play for United, which is all plus points, but from United’s view, he has looked one of the outstanding players of the tournament so far.”
“Therefore that leaves them in a very strong position.”
“They certainly don’t need to sell him – they’re well within their limits of FFP and have plenty of cash in the bank.”
“But they may be looking to recoup the money they spent on Lukaku.”
“Lingard is in a premium position – so United would be looking for at least £80m from his sale.”
“You’d have to look domestically, only Chelsea would be interested unless [Pep] Guardiola feels he can develop him further.”
“But the chances of him going to City are slim, which leaves you with only Juventus and the three big clubs in Spain to compete.”
Lingard, who joined Manchester United’s youth academy at the age of seven, has signed a professional contract in the summer of 2011.
