Manchester United have officially confirmed that goalkeeper Joel Pereira has completed a season-long loan move to Portuguese club Vitoria Setubal.

The 22-year-old has been serving as the third goalkeeper since Jose Mourinho took over at Old Trafford in the summer of 2016.

However, Pereira has seen himself down in the pecking order following Lee Grant’s arrival from Stoke City as the third goalkeeper.

Read the statement on Man United’s official website: “Manchester United goalkeeper Joel Pereira has completed a loan move to Vitoria Setubal in Portugal.”

“The 22-year-old prospect was heavily involved throughout Tour 2018, presented by Aon, but the arrival of Lee Grant has facilitated a temporary spell away from Old Trafford in order to obtain regular first-team football.”

Pereira said: “I’ve been back at United for the last 18 months and the manager showed good faith in me, good trust.”

“I can’t be thankful enough. He wants me to play and I think it’s the right thing for me too, so we’ll see in the next week where I will spend next season.”

“But obviously what I want is to come back mentally stronger and with more experience, more games under my belt, and prove to the manager that the faith he’s put in me is right.”

Pereira, who made just three first-team appearances for United in three seasons, is eager to show Red Devils boss Mourinho what he is capable of.
