Manchester United shocked the world of football on Tuesday by calling time on Mourinho’s two and a half years at the club; having overseen their worst start to 2018/19 season.

Mourinho won the Europa League; EFL Cup and Community Shield in his first season at Old Trafford before finishing runners-up in both the league and FA Cup; but things have changed since the start of his third campaign.

Less than 24 hours after sacking the Portuguese tactician; the club confirmed on Wednesday morning that they had brought in their former striker and reserve team boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer from Molde as caretaker manager until next summer.

Solskjaer’s term will begin on Saturday against Cardiff City – a club he previously managed – while according to some reports; Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino is Ed Woodward’s first choice as manager next season while the club also seek to appoint a director of football.

Lingard; who became a regular under Mourinho, took time to thank Mourinho with a Twitter post on Wednesday evening; which read simply: “Thank you for the memories and wisdom.”

Eric Bailly; who struggled to impress Mourinho since arriving from Villarreal in 2016; took to Twitter with a similar message of support after Lingard’s message; writing: “Whatever they may say, I will always be thankful to the person who gave me the chance to make my debut at Old Trafford. Thank you for what you have taught me. Good luck, coach.”
