Manchester United will be forced to pay Jose Mourinho a staggering £12m for his contract if they decide to sack him before seeing out his two-year deal remaining.

The Portuguese boss has clarified during the club’s pre-season tour that he is unhappy with United board due to the club’s lack of summer transfers.

Mourinho has recently revealed that he needs two more signings this summer with the transfer market set to close on Thursday at 5:00 pm in the Premier League.

According to the clause inserted in his contract, Mourinho will be paid only £12m of one season if he was sacked by the club.

A United source said: “It became quite a protracted affair when it came to discussing a final settlement with Louis van Gaal.”

“The club wanted to avoid a repeat of that again in the future – especially as Jose earns far in excess of what he did.”

“Van Gaal held out for every penny but even United have to draw the financial line somewhere with Jose.”

Mourinho, who took over from Louis van Gaal in 2016, has only managed to win FA Community Shield, EFL Cup and UEFA Europa League.
