Jose Mourinho has urged Arsenal to hire Manchester United assistant manager Rui Faria as replacement of departing manager Arsene Wenger.

Last month, Wenger has announced that he will step down as the Gunners manager at the end of this season.

According to reports, Arsenal have been linked with a number of managers including some club legends such as Patrick Vieira, Thierry Henry and Mikel Arteta.

The North-Londoners are said to be interested in former Barcelona boss Luis Enrique, Celtic’s Brendan Rodgers and Liverpool assistant coach Zeljko Buvac.

However, Mourinho has claimed that his assistant Faria would be a good choice for the Gunners’ job.

Asked if his assistant would be a contender for the vacant, the former Chelsea boss said: “I think so, yes. I don’t know (if he wants to be a manager). You ask me if I think it would be a good fit and I say ‘yes’.”

“And I say it because more than my assistant, he is my friend. If my friend has the possibility one day of a big job I would help him to pack and to carry the bags and to wish him luck.”

“So, if one day that is going to happen the first one to be happy would probably be myself because I met him when he was a kid in his university and we were together for 18 years, so he is a big friend, more than an assistant.”

“So, if one day the moment arrives, I will be very happy.”

Faria has been working with Mourinho since January 2002 during his time at FC Porto; while Wenger has been Arsenal manager for 22 years, as he joined the side in 1996 from Monaco.
