Jose Mourinho has told Manchester United fans they can help beat Liverpool on Sunday, as the United manager urged supporters to ‘come to play’ when Jurgen Klopp’s team turn up at Old Trafford this weekend.

After watching his team take a step towards a League Cup final at Wembley with a 2-0 semi-final first leg victory over Hull City, Mourinho claimed there was room for improvement from everyone.

And he has told fans they can influence the result against Liverpool in a game that could decide whether United are included in the list of contenders for this season’s Premier League title.

Mourinho said: “I always think we are responsible for the fans’ participation in the game. The fans, they come to the pitch and play with us. When we didn’t play so well, they were fantastic.

“When we don’t play with great intensity it is normal that the fans are not so vocal. But we have absolutely amazing fans, fans who push us and get behind us.

“But I feel Sunday is a special match for us, a special match for the Manchester United fans. So my invitation is not to come to the theatre – but come to play with us.”
