Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has confirmed that midfielder Nemanja Matic will miss the start of the 2018-19 Premier League season due to the injury problem.

The Serbia international, who picked up an injury in during the 2018 World Cup in Russia, will start the new season on the sideline after undergoing surgery on an abdominal injury.

“Matic came from the World Cup with an injury and the time he had to rest on holiday was not enough to resolve the problem,” manager Jose Mourinho said.

“He went to Philadelphia for a top specialist and he didn’t leave the clinic, he immediately had surgery.”

“He is out for the start of the season, he came from the World Cup with the injury. And the time he had to rest on holiday was not enough to resolve the problem.”

“I don’t know how long he will be out for.”

Matic, who has returned to Old Trafford to continue his rehabilitation, has not featured in any pre-season games this summer.

United, who faced a 4-1 thrashing at the hands of Liverpool over the weekend, will open their Premier League campaign against Leicester City at Old Trafford on 10 August.
