In 1998, Ferguson was looking to build a team capable of challenging the very best in Europe. The fiery boss made the trip to Holland to watch Jaap Stam play for PSV and he was convinced. Manchester United paid £10.6 million to get their man. He was in the team that lifted the Champions League in 1999.
The Dutchman career at Old Trafford did not last long. The Scott sanctioned the sale of the defender for £16.5 million to Serie A side Lazio. In his book after retirement, he admitted he made a mistake. The defender went on to play at the highest level for five more years.

In 2014, after the World Cup, Louis Van Gaal decided to splash £16 million to sign Argentine defender Marcos Rojo from Sporting Lisbon. The deal also involved Luis Nani joining the Portuguese side on loan. The talented left-footed defender plays as a left back for his country but he arrived at Old Trafford to play as a left-sided central defender. Since he arrived, injuries have limited his appearances to only 107 in 4 years. He is one of those who might leave the club in January or summer transfer windows.
