Many people had been apprehensive about the use of video referee in football. This is known as Video Assistant Review (VAR). The World Cup 2018 came with a bunch of surprises. In France’s match against Australia, the historic moment occurred. France became the first team to be awarded a penalty kick via VAR.
5. South Korea, the first Asian team to beat Germany since 1994

As the defending champions, Germany thought they were going to be a big threat in again this time. But Joachim Low and his boys saw the opposite as South Korea destroyed their path early. Led by Heung-Min Son in a shocking upset, South Korea beat Germany. They denied the defending champions a chance to advance beyond the first round. South Korea became the first Asian team to beat Germany in the World Cup since 1994.
