Former Chelsea striker Tony Cascarino has claimed that Liverpool winger Mohamed Salah is a one-season wonder in the English Premier League.
Salah has won the Premier League Golden Boot last season after scoring 32 league goals in his first season at Liverpool.
However, former Republic of Ireland star Cascarino believes the Egyptian’s goalscoring exploits will be eclipsed this season by Eden Hazard.
“I think Eden Hazard will outscore Mohamed Salah this season,” Cascarino told the Times.
“In which case the Chelsea player’s all-around attributes would put him well ahead of the Egyptian.”
“Salah is an exceptional talent but I just wonder if last season, when he hit 44 goals for Liverpool in all competitions, was his ‘Clive Allen’ season.”
“Allen scored 49 goals for Tottenham Hotspur in all competitions in 1986-87 but his next-best season’s total playing for a top-flight club was only 15 for Queens Park Rangers in 1983-84.”
“Salah should still pass 20 goals this time around but 44 will be well out of reach.”
“But I don’t think Hazard has achieved his potential yet. His work rate off the ball doesn’t match Salah’s.”
“He needs to replicate his tigerish efforts for Belgium against Brazil at the World Cup — if he can add that consistently to his individual magic there will be no stopping him.”
Hazard has so far scored six Premier League goals in seven games while Salah has netted just times in six appearances.
