2017/18 Premier League season concluded last Sunday. It was a perfect season for Champions Manchester City who finished the season with a record 100 points. Manchester United fans will be disappointed to miss out on the title once again but finishing second was a great achievement going by the disappointing campaigns since Sir Alex Ferguson left the club. Chelsea and Arsenal underperformed but someone will have to finish in 5th and sixth position every season. Today, we want to focus on defenders. We want to look at five most solid center-backs by duel success rate in the just-concluded season.

5. Jamaal Lascelles- 66.7% Duel Success Rate

Newcastle United finished 10th on the table in their first season back in Premier League. It is a massive achievement for a newly promoted side. Rafa Benitez did a great job despite lack of signings in January. The Spaniard and the Toon army will need to thank all the players for their effort but captain Jamaal Lascelles in particular. The defender had the fifth best duel success rate in the league with 66.7%. It was better than all centre-backs from Champions Manchester City, Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea.

4. James Tarkowski- 66.7% Duel Success Rate

England boss Gareth Southgate will make a serious mistake if he leaves behind James Tarkowski in his final 23 to play in Russia World Cup next month. The centre-back has the best duel success rate if you consider all English defenders ahead of him in the pecking order. The job done by the Burnley defense is the reason why they will play in Europa League for the first time in over five decades. The centre-half finished the season with a 66.7% duel success rate which is the fourth highest.

3. Jan Vertonghen- 67.9% Duel Success Rate

Tottenham Hotspurs players and fans voted Jan Vertonghen as their player of the season. This is massive given Harry Kane scored 30 Premier League goals. However, the Belgian defender did a great job at the back alongside young center-back Davinson Sanchez. He finished the season with a duel success rate of 67.9% which was the third highest in the League. Roberto Martinez knows his team is in safe hands in Russia World Cup in June.
