Growing up, Sadio Mane lived with his uncle as his parents had a lot of children and could not meet his basic needs financially. “My parents never had money to send me to school,” Mone recalled. “Every morning and evening, I would always go to play football with my friends.”
6. His village contributed money to help Mane live his dream
Sadio Mane’s family was not a football one. In the beginning, they never accepted it. But the more they saw how much he wanted it that there was nothing else for him, they decided to help. His uncle and parents sold all crops produced from their farms to raise money for Sadio.

His talent was so obvious and inspiring that even people who didn’t know Mane pulled together to help him go to the city and live his passion. “My uncle was the biggest help. But not only one at the start, almost everyone in my village contributed money for me,” said Mane.
5. Mane faced disgrace because he was poor
“I will never forget this, and it’s funny now.” Mane said. “But when I went to try out, there was an old man that looked at me like I was in the wrong place. He asked me ‘are you here for the test?’ I said I was. He asked me, ‘with those boots?’ He looked at them angrily. ‘How can you play in them?’ They were bad, really bad – torn and old.
And then he said, ‘and with those shorts? You don’t even have proper football shorts.’ Mane told him what he came with was his best. Then went he got on the pitch, he proved the old man wrong.
