The transfer market has gone crazy in Europe in recent years. It all started when Manchester United and Real Madrid decided to splash crazy cash on players like Gareth Bale and Paul Pogba. They are stars but many pundits criticized the amount paid for them. The arrival of Middles East and Chinese billionaires have made the situation even worse. Today, we want to look at record profits made by a number of clubs in Europe via player sales.

5. Zinedine Zidane – €74 million in profit

Real Madrid fans started enjoying top stars a long time ago. In 2001, the Los Blancos paid €77.5 million to sign the most elegant footballer in history Zinedine Zidane. The Ballon d’Or winner was like the finest wine in Europe that time.

He arrived at Santiago Bernabeu for a record fee and helped them lift UEFA Champions League in his first year at the club. His wonder goal in the final is still a marvel. The shocking part comes when you think about the profit Juventus made in the deal. They had signed the French man for only €3.5 million in 1996 from Ligue 1 side Bordeaux. This means they made a total of €74 million in the transfer. In 2001, that kind of money was unheard of, it just shows how good the 1998 World Cup winner was at the time.

4. Cristiano Ronaldo – €75 million in profit

The crazy transfer market was started by none other than Real Madrid. The La Liga giant could not continue watching Manchester United shine in Europe. All Whites always believe they should be the best in Europe all the time. They are always ready to splash the cash if they want you.

In 2009, they had seen enough and they sanctioned their transfer team to try and pull off the deal of the decade. The Los Blancos paid a World record €94 million to sign 2008 Ballon d’Or winner. He had helped the Red Devils lift UEFA Champions League the same year. He also lifted European Golden Boot in the same year.

The Premier League side had paid only €19 million in 2003 to sign him from Sporting Lisbon. They earned a record €75 million in the deal. The record was beaten by Bale transfer to Madrid when they paid €101 million. Spurs earned €86 million in the deal.

3. Gareth Bale – €86.3 million in profit

Real Madrid could not watch as Barcelona strengthened their squad when they signed Neymar from Santos. Fiorentino Perez moved with speed and signed Tottenham Hotspurs winger Gareth Bale. The Los Blancos paid a total of €101 million.

Spurs President Daniel Levy is a hard bargainer and he made it really hard for the Spanish giant. The Premier League side had signed the Welsh international from Southampton for only €14.7 million as a left back. They made a total of €86.3 million in the deal. It remains the biggest profit ever made by an English club in the transfer of players.

2. Ousmane Dembele – €90 million in profit

Barcelona was shocked when PSG paid a record fee to sign Neymar. They made a record profit and they needed to buy a replacement as quick as possible. They paid €105 million for Ousmane Dembele from Borussia Dortmund.

The Bundesliga side could not resist the money because it is the biggest offer they have ever received. The German side had only signed him for only € 15 million less than a year before. The deal to sell the 20-year-old means they made €90 million. It is a record in the country as well.

1. Neymar – €133.8 Million in profit

Barcelona was shocked in the summer of 2017 when PSG decided to activate Neymar release clause. The Catalan giants had no option but to let him go because he also wanted to sell. They signed him in 2013 for €88.2 million from Brazilian side Santos.

The Ligue 1 giant paid €222 million to get the Brazilian. The transfer earned Camp Nou a record €133 million in profits. The Club used part of the money to sign Ousmane Dembele from Borussia Dortmund.
