Chelsea will now face Belarusian side BATE Borisov tonight at Borisov Arena as the West London side look to confirm their place in the Europa League knockout stages.
The Blues are currently group leaders with nine points but Kovacic has warned his side to be well prepared in Belarus.
Maurizio Sarri has left Alvaro Morata, David Luiz, Antonio Rudiger and Marcos Alonso at home; while Cesc Fabregas was reportedly left out because he is suffering from fever.
Chelsea boss Sarri has claimed that rest was necessary for those left at home, but Kovacic urges his side to learn from Premier League rivals, Liverpool.
The Reds beat Red Star Belgrade 4-0 at Anfield last month but they have suffered a 2-0 defeat at Rajko Mitić Stadium in Serbia on Tuesday night.
“I watched the game, Liverpool struggled a lot,” the Croatia international midfielder said.
“In Belgrade the atmosphere is tough. It’s difficult to play there, like here. These are games where you need to concentrate a lot or you will lose the game.”
“The most important thing is we need to be prepared so that what happened to Liverpool doesn’t happen to us.”
The Stamford Bridge side are unbeaten in competitive games this season, but Kovacic admits his side will continue to improve.
“It’s a good thing that we are unbeaten and not playing to our highest level. We need to improve a lot and we need to work on Sarri’s football. We are doing a great job. The team is great and have a great talent.”

“City with Guardiola struggled in the first season. It’s normal,” the Croatia midfielder added.
“We are still unbeaten and we don’t play at our highest level, because we’re still with the coach only two or three months.”
“We’re doing very well because the team has great talent and we can already have a great season this year.”
“We need to improve a lot. It needs time to understand completely and work on his football, but we’re doing a great job.”
