Former Chelsea left-back Scott Minto has urged Maurizio Sarri to sign a new centre-back in the January transfer window.

Minto, who has been at Stamford Bridge between 1994 and 1997, feels David Luiz has still not proven he can play in a back four.

The Blues, who lost three times under Sarri so far this season, sit in fourth place with 11 points adrift of Premier League leaders Liverpool.

The Italian boss’ side were beaten by Tottenham, Wolves and Leicester City, but Minto believes the West London side need to bring a new centre-back and the backup of Marcos Alonso on the left side.

“I don’t think there’s a lot they can do in January, because the type of player that would have to improve Chelsea just doesn’t come around in the January window,” Minto told Starsport.

“Obviously in defence, the jury’s still out on whether David Luiz can play in a back four.”

“I thought he did very well under [Antonio] Conte in a back three and even though that was a back three, there were times where there was one-on-one defending or his decision making was excellent, and if he can transfer that mentality into playing in a back four then he’s the best ball-playing centre-half in the world.”

“But you need a defender who can defend and what we saw against Spurs just wasn’t good enough. So maybe [they need to sign] a centre-back.

Minto has also insisted that Sarri needs to sign another left-back to help Spanish star, Marcos Alonso.

“I like Alonso at left-back, but I’m not sure the strength in depth in that position is great. If he gets injured I’m a bit worried there.”

The Blues are in action on Sunday afternoon where they will travel to Crystal Palace before they host Southampton next Wednesday.
