Arsene Wenger has confirmed that Arsenal defender will be sidelined for six months after picking up the Achilles injury last week.

Laurent Koscielny has sustained the injury during the Gunners’ 1-0 defeat to Atletico Madrid last Thursday in the semi-final of the Europa League.

The France international was taken off just in 12 minutes of the game at the Wanda Metropolitano, and now Wenger has confirmed that the former Lorient will miss the World Cup.

“Koscielny is, of course, devastated because he needed surgery,” Wenger told reporters at a press conference.

“That means he will be out for six months. You will not see him at the beginning of December at best.”

The 32-year-old, who joined Arsenal in 2010 from Lorient, is expected to return in December this year.

The Gunners vice-captain, who boasts 51 caps for French national, had been planning to retire from international football after this summer’s World Cup in Russia.
