Former Premier League star Alan Smith has urged Arsenal to go for Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly in January but has suggested that the Gunners will struggle to strike the deal.

The North London side have been struggling for defensive options this season under Unai Emery due to injury problems.

Emery, whose side had been linked with a move for Koulibaly in recent weeks, needs to bolster his backline in the new year.

However, former Arsenal forward Smith believes Napoli will take a firm stand on Koulibaly transfer.

And the former England international has claimed that the Gunners should certainly consider a move for United defender Eric Bailly.

“I commentated on the Liverpool vs Napoli game and Koulibaly, the centre-half for Napoli, is very much sought after,” Smith told Express Sport.

“Whether Arsenal can get their clutches in for him, they’ll all be in for him, or most of the top teams in the Premier League.”

“But I doubt if Napoli would let him go in January.”

“Eric Bailly obviously is of a good age,” he added. “He came into the United team and did really well.”

“But he’s one of a few that got the wrong side of Jose Mourinho it seems, so there’s potential there.”
