5. Samuel Kuffour (Bayern München, Roma, Livorno) -73


His most remembered appearances include the entire match as Munich defeated Spanish side Valencia 5-4 on penalties in the 2000/01 Champions League final after the match had ended in a 1-1 draw.

The Ghanaian played in another final during the 1998/99 season but this time Bayern lost 2-1 to Manchester United.

Last year, former Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester City defender Kolo Toure announced his retirement from football and taken up a coaching role at Celtic. One of the most decorated African footballers of all time, he made a strategic 74 Champions League appearances.

3. Michael Essien (Chelsea, Real Madrid, AC Milan) -76


Michael Essien had suffered the agony of a narrow loss in a Champions League final, but he finally did get to host ” Big Ears” in May 2012 after nearly a decade of trying with Olympique Lyon of France and then England’s Chelsea and ultimately achieving that success with the latter.
