Only a few people expected Real Madrid to march into the Champions League quarter-finals, following their relatively poor season thus far. Meanwhile, their biggest rivals Barcelona are likely to make it as well, as they got an away goal on their side and with Chelsea on a run of bad form. Despite the two Spanish giants appearing in a combined total of 23 Champions League finals, they have never met on the final. But could the 2017/18 finally be the year when the Champions League final is also an El Clasico? Here are four reasons why Champions League final could be an El Clasico.
Perhaps the biggest challenge to the Spanish giants would come from England, particularly in the form of Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City. One can easily confirm that the Citizens have already grabbed this season’s Premier League title. And they are standing still in the Champions League. If anyone knows how to fight Pep Guardiola is his old club Barcelona and old rivals from his Barca days, Real Madrid. Since leaving Barca though he’s only faced the Blancos twice and it did not go well as Bayern Munich lost 5-0 on aggregates. Barcelona have only lost one game in all competitions this season so far. Could Pep’s City team beat stand still then?
After the group this years’ stages, the side on everyone’s lips was Paris St. Germain. The French giants scored 25 goals and finished first regardless Bayern Munich in the group stages. As for Real Madrid, they hadn’t shown anything convincing. having been defeated comprehensively by Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley and finishing in second place in their group. Now the story is the opposite as the Madridista turned them away with 5-2 on aggregate. So if they can dominate a side as good as PSG, who is going to be able to stop them marching to the final again?
