Premier League title race is slowly coming to an end after another weekend of mixed results. Manchester City victory and Red Devils defeat means the end is near. Pep Guardiola will now focus his attention to FA Cup, UEFA Champions League, and League Cup final against Arsenal later this month. Jose Mourinho and others will shift their attention to Europe and other domestic competitions. Today, we want to take a look at eleven players who impressed the most in this week team of the week.
Petr Cech- Arsenal
Arsenal had only one shot on target despite the fact that Aubameyang, Lacazette, and Welbeck played on Saturday. On the other hand, the Gunners goalkeeper Petr Cech was kept busy by Tottenham Hostpurs attackers. The home side had 18 shots and 6 of them were on target. The scoreline could’ve been worse by the end of the game.
Kevin Trippier- Tottenham
Kevin Trippier continue to impress on the right back position. He continues to keep Serge Aurier out of the team despite the fact that the Ivory Coast international is more experienced. He managed to keep the Gunners attacking silently for 90 minutes on Saturday.
Ben Davies- Tottenham
Harry Kane scored the winner against Arsenal on Saturday to move above Chelsea and Liverpool on the table. Jurgen Klopp side responded with a 2-0 win to go back to third and Chelsea will have a chance tonight against West Brom. The goal would not have been possible if Ben Davies did not deliver the cross so well for Kane to attack.
Jan Vertonghen- Tottenham
Tottenham Hotspurs narrow win against Arsenal does not really tell the full story. The home side dominated the game from start to finish. They played very well in all departments but it is difficult to ignore the commanding performance by Jan Vertonghen at the back. He did a good job to keep Aubameyang, Welbeck, and Lacazette out for ninety minutes. His defensive partnership with Davinson Sanchez has blossomed in the last couple of months.
Virgil van Dijk- Liverpool
Liverpool has a number of players who once played for Southampton. They include Sadio Mane, Dejan Lovren, Adam Lallana, Nathaniel Clyne and the latest one is Virgil van Dijk. The Dutchman was returning to a club he actually played for less than a month ago. It was obviously hard to play against so many friends. He had a solid game with 2 tackles, 5 aerial duels, 6 clearances, 82 pass accuracy, and 2 interceptions, as a result, he got a clean sheet for the first time since he joined the Reds.
Mousa Dembele- Tottenham
Mousa Dembele is the main reason why Arsenal could not get a foothold on Saturday against bitter rivals Tottenham. The 30-year-old Belgian was simply unplayable against Gunners. He made it very hard for Granit Xhaka, Mesut Ozil, and Henrikh Mkhitaryan to control the game. The holding midfielder was so cool under pressure and Gooners struggled to watch him destroy their team all afternoon.
Gylfi Sigurðsson- Everton
Everton paid £40 million to Swansea City to sign Gylfi Sigurðsson last summer. The Iceland International struggled in the first half of the season and this led to the sacking of Ronald Koeman. On Saturday, he showed once again why he is worth that much. He netted the opener for the Toffees in the 46th minute. He was engaged all afternoon and Big Sam will be impressed by that performance.
