GOLDEN TEN: Top 10 most EXPENSIVE African footballers of All-Time (New List)

African football has continued to grow despite challenges of lack of facilities and poor management across the continent. A quick check at how other continents are doing and you will notice that more players from Africa are playing in Europe top leagues than as compared to Asia, South America, and North America. Today, we can all agree that it is difficult to find any big team in Europe without a player either from Africa or has roots in the continent.

So as we continue to celebrate the success of our football let us take a look at 10 most expensive African footballers ever in history;

10. Emmanuel Adebayor- €28.95 Million

Togolese International Emmanuel Adebayor is a legend in his country and indeed the African continent. He has played for some of the best teams in Europe among them Real Madrid, Arsenal, Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspurs.

In 2009, he made history when Manchester City paid €28.95 Million for his services after a successful spell with the Gunners where he scored 62 goals in 142 appearances. He did not enjoy the same success at City but he netted 19 goals in 45 matches.  He later joined Mourinho at Madrid, Spurs and Crystal Palace. He currently plays for İstanbul Başakşehir.

9. Wilfried Bony- €32.6 Million

Manchester City paid €32.6 Million for Ivory Coast International Wilfried Bony in 2015 after an impressive run of goal scoring in his two years at Swansea City. In his first season at Liberty Stadium, he scored 25 goals in 48 appearances and added 9 more in the following season in 22 matches to earn himself a mega deal to Etihad. However his City career never really took off and after a poor loan spell at Stoke, he is back at Swansea City.

8. Yaya Touré- €33.8 Million

Ivory Coast Africa Cup of Nation winning Captain in 2015 Yaya Toure will go down as one of the best midfielders ever to play in both the Premier League and La Liga. He won all trophies available at Barcelona before making a €33.8 Million switch to Manchester City in 2010.

Pep Guardiola had a conflict with the midfielder again when he joined City in 2016 summer. However, they have so far ironed out their differences which were largely brought about by his agent. In his time at Etihad Toure has helped City lift 2 league titles, 1 FA Cup, and 2 League Cups.

7. Islam Slimani- €34.40 Million (£29.5 )

Leicester City splashed £29.5 or  €34.40 Million to sign Algerian forward Islam Slimani from Sporting Lisbon last summer.  The Algerian did not play a big role in the Foxes survival campaign but next season will be big for him.

6. Eric Bailly – €34.98 Million (£30million)

Manchester United shocked the world last summer when they paid €34.98 Million or £30million for a little-known 22-year-old Villarreal defender. Jose Mourinho made him his first signing after taking over at Old Trafford. He has enjoyed a brilliant start to life in England earning praise from former defender Nemanja Vidic and others. He is already a regular in the Ivory Coast national team.
