4. For the first time, Jose Mourinho praises Luke Shaw for his great contribution
Jose Mourinho has praised Luke Shaw for making a great contribution as Manchester United claimed a 2-1 win over CSKA Moscow in the Champions League.
The 22-year-old made his first start of the season and put in an energetic performance on the left flank.
The England international has impressed both in defence and in the attack.
“We confirmed our progression but in the way we wanted to,” Mourinho told BT Sport. “We played well and got the result. At halftime, we were playing well and I was not unhappy. The boys played professionally. Luke Shaw offensively was very good and made a great contribution to the team.”
“Shaw had waited for a long time, it is not easy to give an opportunity to a player in matches when we need results. I wanted to make changes. But Luke managed 90 minutes and I told him it is an opportunity to increase his levels.”
Prior to the game against CSKA, Shaw had only made two substitute appearances in the EFL Cup this season.
3. Jose Mourinho reveals his best goalkeeper, not De Gea
Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has joked that David de Gea is only the third-best goalkeeper at his disposal.
De Gea was in inspired form to help United to a 3-1 victory over Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday, making no fewer than 14 saves.
Asked whether he has ever worked with a better goalkeeper, Mourinho told reporters: “Yes. Romero. Because he plays [against CSKA] and my goalkeeper is always the best goalkeeper in the world.”
“So now David is the third best. Romero is number one, Joel number two and David is the third best.”
