BBC African Footballer of the Year 2017 shortlist is out and the heads are rolling already. The five stars nominated include two from Bundesliga and three from Premier League. The fans can vote for their favorite on the BBC Sports Website/African Football until 1800 GMT on the 27th November. Riyad Mahrez of Algeria and Leicester City won the award in 2016. The winner will be announced on Monday, 11 December. In no particular order, take a look at five players nominated for the award.
5. Naby Keita- Guinea/RB Leipzig
Guinea International was not known until last season when he joined Bundesliga side, RB Leipzig. The 22-year-old has been praised from all corners. He was voted midfielder of the year in Germany. He also made the League team of the year.
A promoted side surprised everybody to finish second behind Bayern Munich. At one point, Carlo Ancelotti was scared because the new side was threatening his side. The youngster scored 8 goals and assisted 7 others last season. He has netted 2 so far this season.
4. Victor Moses- Nigeria/Chelsea
Nigerian International Victor Moses was becoming a loan master until the arrival of Antonio Conte in 2016 changed his career. The Italian started to play him in right back and the rest is history. He played regularly to help Chelsea lift the Premier League crown. The London side also finished second behind Arsenal in FA Cup.
This year has ended well for him because he helped his country qualify for FIFA World Cup 2018 in Russia. The midfielder might be the most successful nominee on the list. His achievement in 2017 can’t be rivaled by any other player on the list.
3. Sadio Mane- Senegal/Liverpool
Liverpool fans will certainly love the fact that their team is full of award-winning stars. Sadio Mane joins Mohamed Salah on the BBC Shortlist for the best African player. The Senegalese have enjoyed a great year so far despite injuries.
Last weekend, he assisted 2 goals as Senegal thrashed South Africa 2-0 to reach Russia 2018 World Cup for the first time since 2002. He also scored 13 times in 29 appearances for the Reds to help them return to the Champions League. The 25-year-old has also been nominated for the Ballon d’Or award. Last season, he was voted Liverpool player of the year by both fans and fellow players.
2. Mohamed Salah- Egypt/Liverpool
Egypt international Mohamed Salah is having a great year. He helped his country qualify for Russia 2018 World Cup for the first time since 1990. He netted 5 goals in 11 matches in 2017 alone. The 25-year-old also helped his country finish second in Africa Cup of Nations after losing to Cameroon in the final.
The former Chelsea and AS Roma forward signed for Liverpool last summer after a great season in Italy. He scored 19 goals in 41 matches for the Serie A side. This season so far, he has found the net 12 times in only 17 matches. The Reds can now let Philippe Coutinho leave because they have a better player.
1. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang- Gabon/Dortmund
Gabon international Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has been nominated for BBC African Player of the Year award for the fifth year in a row. He helped Borussia Dortmund lift the German Cup also known as DFB-Pokal Cup.
The 28-year-old striker also won the Bundesliga Golden Boot after scoring 31 goals in the league alone. He managed to beat Bayern Munich forward Robert Lewandowski. In 2015, he was named CAF African Footballer of the Year.
Last season he netted 40 goals in all competitions for his club and this season he has already scored 15 times in only 17 matches. He is certainly one of the favorites.
