The final shortlist of nominees for BBC African Footballer of the Year is set to be revealed today. The fans were shocked a fortnight ago when CAF left out last year winner Riyad Mahrez on their list. The continent will be watching today to see who makes the list this year. We expect the likes of Eric Bailly, Sadio Mane, and Mo Salah to be included. Today, we want to remind you the last five winners of the award.
5. André Ayew- 2011 (Ghana)
West Ham United is currently struggling despite having great players in the team. Top in that list is Ghanaian international André Ayew. The attacker lifted BBC Africa Footballer of the year in the year 2011.
The forward had a great year in 2010/11 for both club and country. He helped Marseille lift Trophée des champions: 2010, 2011, and Coupe de la Ligue: 2011. He also won Africa Cup of Nations Silver Medal in 2010 for his country.
4. Christopher Katongo- 2012 (Zambia)
Zambia football Legend Christopher Katongo is coming to the end of his career. He currently plays for Zambia Premier Soccer League club Green Buffaloes F.C. The Southern Africa country did the unthinkable in 2012 by defeating Côte d’Ivoire 8–7 on post-match penalties.
The 35-year-old was the Captain then and he actually the first spot kick. The likes Didier Drogba, Yaya Toure among other stars could not believe their eyes. They were the favorites but Zambia did not care about that. BBC awarded Katongo Best player award that year.
3. Yacine Brahimi- 2014 (Algeria)
Algerian International Yacine Brahimi surprised everybody when he won BBC African Footballer of the Year in 2014. He played for La Liga side Granada, but he later switched to Ligue 1 side, FC Porto. The 27-year-old had a great year and he was fully recognized for his success.
In the same year, the North African star also lifted LFP Awards Best African player: 2013–14 and CAF Most Promising Talent of the Year: 2014.
2. Yaya Touré- 2013, 2015 (Ivory Coast)
Ivory Coast International Yaya Toure best days are certainly behind him. However, he achieved everything on the pitch and he got rewarded for his effort. He is the only player who has won BBC African Player of the Year twice in the last 10 years. He lifted it in 2013 and 2015.
He lifted his first award in 2013 after helping Manchester City lift the Premier League (2011–12, 2013–14). The 34-year-old won his second award in 2015 after helping his country lift Africa Cup of Nations. The trophy had eluded the talented side for several years.
1. Riyad Mahrez- 2016 (Algeria)
Algerian International is the current holder of BBC African Footballer of the Year award. He won it last year after a great season with Leicester City. He scored 18 goals in 37 Premier League matches to help his club lift the League title. He also helped his team reach Champions League quarter-final for the first time in history.
