The form is never guaranteed in front of goal, but it will always be a surprise when a player who has found the net so regularly in the past is suddenly coming up short.
Here’s a look at six superstars struggling to score at their usual rate so far in 2017/18.
6. Alexis Sanchez
1 Goal in 8 League Appearances; 2 Goals in all Competitions
Alexis Sanchez had the single best goalscoring season of his career in 2017/18; netting a total of 30 times in all competitions from a combination of central and wide forward roles.
A delayed start to the campaign as a result of summer international duty and injury may have played a part, but Arsenal fans will also be questioning if his head is actually still in it.
5. Andrea Belotti
3 Goals in 9 League Appearances; 5 Goals in all Competitions
Torino was after a fee in excess of £80m to part with top striker Andrea Belotti during the summer, but ‘one season wonder’ might be a label soon attached if he doesn’t hit top form.
Belotti scored 28 times in all competitions during his breakout year in 2016/17 and it will take a significant upturn in front of goal if he is to get close to that number again this season.
4. Luis Suarez
3 Goals in 8 League Appearances; 3 Goals in all Competitions
While Lionel Messi has been banging on the goals for Barcelona and former colleague Neymar has been freely scoring for Paris Saint-Germain, Luis Suarez has not yet hit his stride.
The Uruguayan managed more than a goal per game – 59 in 53 – in 2015/16 and still very impressive tally of 37 in all competitions last season. But 2017/18 has been a different story.
3. Thomas Muller
1 Goal in 9 League Appearances; 2 Goals in all Competitions
For the second season running, Thomas Muller’s goal tally for Bayern Munich is way down on the previous standards the German forward has set for himself throughout his career.
From netting 32 times in all competitions in 2015/16; Muller failed to hit double figures last season for the first time in his career and is on course to match that low tally.
2. Antoine Griezmann
2 Goals in 9 League Games, 3 Goals in all Competitions
Last season was the first of Antoine Griezmann’s Atletico Madrid career in which he failed to score more than 20 La Liga goals, and his current rate of scoring is even slower.
The Frenchman, who has been linked with €100m moves to Manchester United and Barcelona; has only found the net three times in total and not at all since September.
1. Cristiano Ronaldo
1 Goal in 7 League Games; 8 Goals in all Competitions
Cristiano Ronaldo has had to rely on the Champions League as the main source of his goals so far this season; with only a solitary strike coming in La Liga.
It certainly isn’t through a lack of trying on the part of the four-time Ballon d’Or winner; with only Lionel Messi taking more shots on goal in La Liga this season.
