Champions League Round-up: Conte DESTROYED, Bayern & PSG Qualify, Mourinho Not yet there

UEFA Champions League match-day four round one is done and dusted. PSG and Bayern Munich become the first teams to reach the last 16 despite the fact that there are still two matches remaining. Let us take a look at what happened on Tuesday night and what to expect tonight.

Bayern and PSG through to the Last 16

Bayern Munich is through to the last sixteen despite a poor start to the competition. The Bavarians somehow managed to beat Celtic 2-1 on Tuesday night. Brendan Rogers was disappointed to lose the match because his team matched the Bundesliga side from start to finish. The win means the Scottish side has only 3 points and they can’t therefore qualify.

PSG, on the other hand, continue to destroy teams both home and away. Last night, the Ligue 1 giant scored five past RSC Anderlecht to reach the last sixteen. They have 12 points from the four matches they’ve played. A perfect record so far. They will be a force to reckon with in Europe.

ALMOST THERE: Man United and Barcelona close but not there yet

Manchester United became the second team in Champions League this season to reach 12 points so far this season. The Red Devils did not play their best football on Tuesday but they still came out 2-0 winners against Portuguese side Benfica. However, they are still not there yet because CSKA Moscow somehow managed to beat Basel 2-1 away from home.

This means two teams are on six points with two matches to go. If they win their last two matches, any of the three teams can qualify. Jose Mourinho will not be happy with that because he thought the job is done. The goals last night came via an own goal and Delay Blind penalty.

Barcelona, on the other hand, needs one more win to reach the last sixteen. They failed to net against Greek side Olympiacos despite dominating the match. The Catalan side has 10 points. Juventus is second with 7 after a 1-1 draw away against Sporting Lisbon. The Portuguese side now has 4 points.

Conte & Chelsea THRASHED by Roma but Atletico is completely LOST

Chelsea problems continue to pile up as the season progress. The Premier League champions were outclassed and outplayed by Serie A side AS Roma. The Blues received a 3-0 thrashing in Rome leaving their qualification in tatters.

Antonio Conte will not say he did see this coming because the Italian side almost won the first leg at Stamford Bridge two weeks ago. The London fixture ended 3-0 but it is the visitors who looked like winning it. Antonio Rudiger was particularly very poor against a team he played for less than three months ago.

The pundits called it Group of death and they were right. However, nobody foresaw Atletico Madrid struggling. In fact, many tipped them to win the group. Now they have only 3 points from 3 draws. They must beat Chelsea and Roma in their last two matches to finish with nine points. They can still do it on paper but they have been poor so far. The bad news is if the other two win against Qarabag, Diego Simeone side will be relegated to Europa League.

Wednesday Action: Madrid meet Spurs at Wembley, City & Liverpool also in action

Real Madrid will face Tottenham Hotspurs at Wembley Stadium tonight. The two sides drew 1-1 at Santiago Bernabeu in the first leg. The situation is different this time because Spurs talisman Harry Kane is doubtful. A win for any of them will guarantee a last 16 place because the other two sides Dortmund and APOEL have only 1 point each so far.

The Los Blancos 2-1 defeat on Sunday against Girona means both clubs are low in confidence because the London side also lost 1-0 to Manchester United. It is a match that can go either way but the pundits will fancy Ronaldo side to win because the ground is neutral.

Manchester City will book a place in the last sixteen if they can manage to beat Napoli away from home tonight. They lead Group F with 9 points. The Serie A side must win the clash to keep their hopes alive. Pep Guardiola is yet to lose a match in all competition so far.

Liverpool will hope they can make it six points tonight when they welcome NK Maribor at Anfield. They thrashed the same team 7-0 away in the first leg to move to second place in the Group. A win tonight will be crucial for them given their last two matches will be against Sevilla and Spartak Moscow.
