Frank Lampard backs Bakayoko to fill Matic void at Chelsea; while the legend urges the Blues to sign Everton’s Ross Barkley. Alvaro Morata admits he has to prove his value at Stamford Bridge; while Arsene Wenger has sympathy for Chelsea boss Antonio Conte.
5. Arsene Wenger has sympathy for Chelsea boss Antonio Conte
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has admitted that he has sympathy for Antonio Conte over the size of his squad. But the Frenchman believes that his Chelsea counterpart has made his own problems.
Both Conte and skipper Gary Cahill have confessed to being worried by the dearth of options available from the bench.
“Maybe he has the opposite problem [to Arsenal]. But if you look at the number of players that are out on loan, they can call a few back,” he told Sky Sports News. “I have sympathy for him. But do I feel sorry for Chelsea because they don’t have enough players? Then no.”
4. Alvaro Morata admits he has to prove his value at Stamford Bridge
Alvaro Morata admits he has to prove he is worth the £75m Chelsea paid for him this summer.
The striker told Marca: “I admit it’s a very important amount. But I have the personality to play quietly and go my way.”
“I have only two pre-season games, 15 official minutes and a failed penalty [in the Community Shield’s loss to Arsenal]… and they’re already killing me, so I know what’s ahead.”
“It is the price that must be paid for such a large transfer.”
“And it’s something that motivates me and makes me work harder every day, to spend an hour every day in the Sports City training. I know now twice as many people look at me.”
3. Lampard urges Chelsea to sign Everton’s Ross Barkley
Former Chelsea great midfielder Frank Lampard has told the Blues to sign Everton playmaker Ross Barkley this summer.
Lampard thinks his former side would get the best out of England midfielder Barkley, who recently rejected contract extension at Goodison Park.
The legend said: “I like Ross and he’s got so much talent. While it does look like he’s going to leave now, he does need to go to a club where he can fulfill that talent.”
“It’s all there, but he probably just needs to get a bit more out of himself. He’s at a young age and it seems that he wants to move.”
“If he comes to a team like Chelsea or Tottenham, the players around him will help him improve because he’ll see what it takes to go to the next level.”
“Ross has the potential and he needs to go to the next level, he needs to look at the likes of Hazard and Willian and try and do the things they do.”
“That’s not just have the potential, but to create and score goals regularly.”
