The landscape in football is changing according to the latest report released by CIES Football Observatory. Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo time are quickly running out. They have dominated the game in the last one and half decade. The latest report on player’s market value puts CR7 at position 11 with a valuation of £99 million. The Argentine is doing better but he is not in the top three. The question is what criteria did they use to get the most valuable players today.
The research focused on performance, employer clubs, international status, contract, age, position, and marketability. Ronaldo is by far the most marketable athlete on earth but he does not have many years remaining.
Let us take a look at the top seven new stars in the block;
7. Paul Pogba- £118 million
Manchester United paid £89 million to bring back Paul Pogba from Juventus. If this report is to be used in transfers, the Red Devils would have paid £118 million to sign him. The French holding midfielder had a mixed debut season at Old Trafford but the future is bright.
6. Luis Suarez- £124 million
Barcelona striker Luis Suarez takes position 6th in the list despite his advanced age. The Uruguay International is valued at £124 million. The 30-year-old scored 37 goals in 51 appearances in all competitions last season. This was lower than what he managed in his previous season. In 2015/16 season he scored 59 times in only 53 matches.
5. Antoine Griezmann- £132 million
Atletico Madrid forward was set to join Manchester United this summer. However, the deal collapsed because the La Liga transfer ban was upheld by International Sports Tribunal. The 26-year-old had to commit his future to the Club.
This report puts his value at around £132 million; this is only £2 million lower than five times World Player of the Year Messi. There is no chance any club can pay that kind of money in January next year when he will be available again.
4. Lionel Messi- £134 million
European Golden Boot winner in 2016/17 season is no more the most valuable player in the World. The Barcelona star can only take position four at a valuation of £134 million. He failed to inspire his team to glory both in La Liga and Europe. CR7 took all the accolades.
The 29-year-old Argentine skipper netted 54 goals in 52 matches for his club to help them win Copa del Rey. In the same period, he scored 9 times for his country. The best years are certainly behind him.
3. Harry Kane- £135 million
Premier League Golden Boot winner Harry Kane is in a league of his own. He takes position three in the valuation game exactly £1 million ahead of Lionel Messi. It will be hard to convince the Tottenham Hotspurs skipper that he is better than the Argentine. He scored 29 goals in only 30 League matches. The 23-year-old netted 35 in 38 matches in all competitions.
2. Dele Alli- £136 million
The biggest surprise in the list is without a doubt the valuation of Dele Alli. The 21-year-old Tottenham Hotspurs attacking midfielder is valued at £136 million, £2 million more than Messi. The England International netted 22 goals in 50 appearances last season to help his side finish 2nd in the Premier League.
The reason why it is a strange valuation is that 18-year-old Kylian Mbappe is valued at £82 million by the same report. This is despite the fact that he scored 26 goals in 44 matches in all competitions last season. All top clubs in Europe want to sign him.
1. Neymar- £185 million
Barcelona star Neymar will is the most valuable player in 2017 according to CIES Football Observatory. The 25-year-old Brazilian is valued at £185 million. He had a poor season by his high standards. He managed only 20 goals in 45 appearances in all competitions.
However, according to the report based on performance, employer clubs, international status, contract, age, position, and marketability, he is the best. The jury is out because this is certainly debatable.
