NEW: Top 7 HIGHEST Paid Football Stars in the World in 2017

Forbes 2017 list of highest paid athletes in the World is out. Two footballers make the top five. Others stars in the top five include NBA Stars LeBron James and Kevin Durrant. Tennis legendary star Roger Federer completes the list.

Today, we take a look at seven soccer stars who make the list;

7. Luis Suarez- $23.3m

Luis Suarez is the 3rd Barcelona in the list. The Uruguay international earned a total of $23.3m (€20.6m, £17.9m) in 2017. He has continued to hammer the goals in at Camp Nou after ditching Liverpool in 2014.

6. Wayne Rooney- $23.6m

Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney is still one of the highest paid athletes in the World. He takes position 70 on the overall list but he is 6th in the footballer’s list. He earned a total of $23.6m (€20.9m, £18.2m).

The Red Devils and England record goal scorer is set to leave Old Trafford. The 32-year-old struggled to get playtime when Zlatan Ibrahimovic was fit. The Head Coach Jose Mourinho has said he will not push the Club legend out of the club. However, he wants to play for his country in 2018 World Cup which means he will need to leave the club to play regularly.

5. Zlatan Ibrahimovic- $32m

Manchester United star Zlatan Ibrahimovic takes the fifth spot in the list of highest earning footballers in 2017. He made $32m (€28.4m, £24.6m) in the year in salary and endorsements. He joined the Red Devils on a free transfer from PSG. There are reports he will leave the club this summer but no confirmation has been made so far. He was the most prolific player at Old Trafford with 28 goals.

4. Gareth Bale- $34m

Real Madrid most expensive player in history earned a total of $34m (€32.8m and £26.2m) this year. He struggled all season with injuries but he recovered just in time to play his part in the Champions League final at Cardiff. He has been linked with a move away from the Santiago Bernabeu.

3. Neymar- $37m

The Brazilian takes position four when it comes to footballers in the list. However, he is 18th in the overall list of highest earning athletes in the World. The Barcelona star earned $37m in 2016/17 season. The 25-year-old made $22m in endorsements and in $15m salary.

2. Lionel Messi- $80m

 

Barcelona star has been pushed to third this year by NBA star LeBron James. This is a clear indication of his declining image especially when it comes to endorsements. The Argentine made $80m in the just-concluded football season.

The five times World Player of the year earned $53m in salary and winning bonuses. The 29-year-old also made $27m in endorsements. The star has agreed to a new deal that could possibly push his earnings up come 2018.

1. Cristiano Ronaldo- $93 million

Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo has beaten everybody in the World to emerge top of the list in the Money League. The Portuguese are once again the highest paid athlete in the globe. He earned a total of $93 million. These include $58m and $35m in endorsements.

The only man behind him was NBA star, LeBron James. Lionel Messi was third. CR7 endorsements come from top brands like Tag Heuer, Herbalife, and Abbott Labs. He has also made more money through his business ventures. They include shoes, underwear, fragrance and hotel chains.
