Cheick Ismaël Tioté was an Ivorian footballer who played as a defensive midfielder. He played in Europe for Anderlecht, FC Twente and Newcastle United before moving to China for Beijing Enterprises. He won the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations with the Ivory Coast national team. On June 5th 2017, Tioté suffered a cardiac arrest and died during training in Beijing. 9. Tioté never owned a pair of football boots until the age of 15
Born and raised in Yamoussoukro, Côte d’Ivoire, Tioté played football barefoot in his hometown streets from the age of 10. He got his first pair of cleats at the age of 15, when he began playing at the school level.
8. He couldn’t speak any English before joining Newcastle
After playing for the Dutch club FC Twente for several years, Tioté finally got the opportunity to learn English when he joined the Premier League in 2010. He then mastered English language, but he still had a translator for some occasion.
7. Tioté missed his penalty kick in his debut for Anderlecht
In his debut match for the Dutch club in 2005, Tioté played in the Belgian Cup match against Geel. He missed his penalty kick, and Anderlecht ended up losing the match. Tioté didn’t let the defeat weigh too heavily, and has gone on to have an illustrious career.
